Psychology has had a bad reputation over the years. When someone says that they are seeing a psychologist, one of the assumptions that some people make is that there is something wrong with the person that is seeing the psychologist. Traditionally, Psychology focused on mentally ill people. People with disorders such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. The science of Psychology has grown rapidly in the last century. People were coming home from the two world wars with many forms of psychological distress. Governments around the world pumped vast sums of money into research. Psychology has made a huge impact on society. Many forms of mental illness can now be successfully treated. So, psychology has made a significant impact on the well-being of society. But what about the majority of people? Those people are not severely distressed and they do not suffer from mental illness. The questions that researchers asked is what makes a person have a good life? In the Western world and as far back as 322 BC, ancient philosophers such as Aristotle were contemplating the nature of happiness. These researchers focused on Happiness, well-being and purpose. More recent researchers such as Abraham Maslow And Carl Rogers pioneered the way forward in their approaches to humanistic psychology. In more recent years, scientists such as Ed Diener, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Martin Seligman became popular in what is now known as Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology concerns itself with optimal human functioning. It concerns people, groups, and institutions. Positive Psychology attempts to ask the question: What makes people flourish? How can people become better versions of themselves? Positive Psychology aims to improve the quality of life. Application of Positive Psychology aims to improve the quality of life of individuals, families, organizations and institutions. A confusion that often arises is the misconception that Positive Psychology is the same as having a positive mental attitude. It is not. Positive Psychology is a science.
